“Por Ahora” by Jorge Machain is the NBA Young Composers Jazz Composition Contest winner for 2019. This original work will be performed by the United States Navy Commodores, directed by MUCS William Mulligan, at the 2019 Midwest Clinic. The performance will take place on Thursday, December 19, 7:30 PM, at McCormick Place. All NBA members are encouraged to attend this performance.
Born in 1993, Jorge Machain is a Mexican native who currently calls Las Vegas his home. He is an active musician in the Las Vegas scene. He graduated from UNLV with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Composition and is currently working towards the completion of a Master of Music in Jazz Composition, also at UNLV. Jorge composes for both classical and jazz ensembles. He has won multiple Downbeat awards for his jazz arrangements and was a finalist in the 2018 NBA Revelli Composition Contest for his piece Bite the Bullet, commissioned by Thomas Leslie, Director of Bands at UNLV. Jorge was also a finalist for the Morton Gould Young Composer Competition for 2019. Jorge is currently a member of ASCAP.
