With a heavy heart, we announce that Gladys Wright, one of the most influential pioneers for women in music, has passed away. Her career was defined by excellence, advocacy, and a series of historic “firsts” that shaped the landscape of music education. Mrs. Wright was a true trailblazer, achieving a remarkable 60 large ensemble superior ratings in state and district contests. However, her most enduring impact was her work to elevate the band profession, especially women in the profession.Mrs. Wright was the founding president of the Women Band Directors International in 1969 to support and promote female conductors and was the first woman inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame of Distinguished Conductors. Additionally, she received the NBA Citation of Excellence in 1970. The NBA’s “Al and Gladys Wright Distinguished Legacy Award” was established in 2020 and serves to recognize achievement in leadership, teaching, and/or other professional experience, mentorship, and service to the band profession. This award is named for her and her late husband, Al Wright, who was the first president of the NBA. Mrs. Wright was also the first woman elected to the American Bandmasters Association and was the first woman to be honored as an ABA Life Member.
Gladys Wright dedicated her life to the advancement of bands at all levels and leaves a powerful legacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this time.
